AfD pulls ahead of Union in latest German poll as chancellor resignation debated

According to the latest INSA poll, the AfD now ranks ahead of the Union in the Sunday question. Respondents were asked what they would prefer if Chancellor Friedrich Merz resigned; many indicated a desire for new elections, while a portion favored selecting a new chancellor from one outlet coalition or allowing a Union minority government with AfD tolerance. Among Union supporters, the majority prefer a new chancellor within the existing black-red alliance, with smaller groups backing elections or a tolerated minority government.

AfD voters overwhelmingly back new elections, with a minority open to a tolerated minority government. The poll also captured attitudes among supporters of the Greens, SPD, Linke, BSW and FDP, each showing distinct preferences for coalition continuity or fresh elections. Additionally, the survey highlighted dissatisfaction with the Union among its own voters and noted a recent loss for the CDU in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
