AfD threatens local democracy groups in Saxony-Anhalt over alleged neutrality breaches

AfD lawmaker Sebastian Koch warned the cultural club Ipse Exitare that its recent criticism could lead to loss of public funding.

In a private message, AfD parliamentarian Sebastian Koch told one outlet cultural association Ipse Exitare that recent content critical of the party breached a supposed neutrality obligation and might justify withdrawing its state subsidy. The club, which organizes concerts and community events, declined to comment to one outlet but its chairman Tilo Mottschall called the demand nonsensical, fearing funding would only go to groups aligned with the AfD.

CDU legislator Sandra Hietl-Heuer condemned the notice as intimidation. The party’s program calls for cutting support to NGOs it deems “un-patriotic,” and AfD representatives have already curtailed funds for the federal “Demokratie leben!” scheme in towns such as Bitterfeld-Wolfen. With the state budget still under negotiation, many civil-society projects fear loss of both state and federal money, prompting appeals for private donations and federal assistance.

Why it matters

The AfD’s push to condition funding on political loyalty threatens independent civil-society groups in Saxony-Anhalt.
