AfD wins German state vote, Canada imposes US tariffs, and other headlines
The far-right Alternative for Germany secured a state election, Canada launched retaliatory tariffs against the United States, and several other political and legal developments unfolded worldwide.
The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) won a recent state election in Germany, sparking panic among established parties and prompting analysis of the party’s appeal. In Canada, the government enacted tariffs on $28 billion of American imports as a direct response to a 50% tariff imposed by President Donald Trump on an equal value of Canadian goods. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, together with counterparts from the United Kingdom, France, and nine other nations, issued a statement opposing what they described as actions tantamount to annexation of Palestinian territory, a claim rebuffed by Israel’s ambassador to Canada.
Separately, Toronto condo developer Concord Adex launched a $10 million lawsuit accusing a TikTok account and a Chinese-language RedNote account of orchestrating a false campaign to evade purchase agreements, and is also pursuing more than 50 buyers who defaulted on condo contracts after the market collapse.
