AfD youth leader shares map showing expanded German borders, sparking concern
Luca Maurice Helmut Strauf, a Bavarian AfD youth official, posted a map depicting Germany including Alsace, parts of Lorraine and other neighboring regions, prompting criticism.
Luca Maurice Helmut Strauf, who serves as vice-president of the Bavarian branch of Generation Deutschland and sits on the federal board of the AfD youth wing, shared a graphic on X that outlined a vision of a Greater Germany. The illustration extended Germany’s borders to include Alsace, parts of Lorraine and Moselle, as well as Luxembourg, Austria, nearly all of Switzerland, and various territories in Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
In the accompanying caption, Strauf described German reunification as a step toward bringing the entire German people into a single state. The post was swiftly deleted after it attracted criticism for its irredentist implications. The incident highlights growing concerns about the AfD’s geopolitical rhetoric following its recent regional election successes in former East German states.
Why it matters
The map reveals extremist territorial ideas within a rising German party, raising alarms about nationalist rhetoric in European politics.
