Afghan asylum seeker given indefinite hospital order after fatal October stabbing spree

Dawood Safi, an Afghan migrant, was sentenced to an open-ended hospital order after a psychotic knife attack in October that killed dog walker Wayne Broadhurst and injured his landlord and a teenager.

Afghan migrant Dawood Safi, who entered the UK illegally and later received asylum, was handed an indefinite hospital order after a frenzied stabbing incident in October. The violence began when Safi attacked his landlord Shahzad Farrukh in their Hillingdon home, stabbing him multiple times before fleeing outside, where he killed dog walker Wayne Broadhurst and injured a 14-year-old boy who witnessed the attack. Witnesses described Safi as appearing possessed and hearing voices.

He entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, which prosecutors accepted, and also admitted grievous bodily harm to Farrukh and possession of a knife. The jury could not reach a verdict on the attempted murder of the teenager. At Southwark Crown Court, Mrs Justice Cutts ruled that Safi's psychosis was the sole cause of the offences, sentencing him to several years in a high-security psychiatric hospital and recommending deportation upon any future release. Safi had previously sought mental-health help and had no prior convictions.
