Afghan Christian satellite channel Mozhda TV begins broadcasts amid Taliban restrictions

Mozhda TV, billed as Afghanistan's first Christian satellite channel, launched its programming in Dari and Pashto despite Taliban limits.

Mozhda TV, described by its founders as the inaugural Afghan Christian television network, began airing on Saturday with a mix of religious sermons and programs aimed at women, all presented in Dari and Pashto. The launch ceremony included messages from the Afghanistan Bible Society and a sermon by Masoud Ghorbani, who referenced biblical passages to describe Afghanistan's suffering and need for spiritual guidance. Organizers highlighted that satellite delivery bypasses Taliban censorship, as most families possess satellite dishes.

Technical producer Mikael Tunér explained plans to expand into additional Afghan languages such as Hazaragi, Uzbek, Turkmen and Baluchi. The initiative unites several mission organizations and underground churches, which reportedly number several thousand believers within the country. The channel is also accessible online at mozhda.tv.

Why it matters

It marks the first dedicated Christian TV service for Afghans, challenging Taliban media bans and offering a new outlet for religious expression.
