Africa Finance Corporation issues $430 million digital bond on Swiss blockchain platform

Africa Finance Corporation raised 350 million Swiss francs through a five-year digital bond, the first African-issued security listed on a regulated digital exchange.

The multilateral lender secured 350 million Swiss francs, equivalent to $430 million, via a digital bond that will be settled on a blockchain system operated by Switzerland’s primary stock-exchange provider. The proceeds are earmarked for the corporation’s broader financing needs and to back infrastructure projects across Africa. This transaction marks the inaugural listing of an African institution’s bond on a regulated digital market, reflecting growing interest in tokenised financing. The move coincides with similar initiatives, such as the United Kingdom’s plan to launch a digital sovereign bond next year.

Why it matters

It shows Africa’s move toward blockchain-based financing, potentially expanding capital for needed infrastructure projects.
