Agerpres secures EU and national funding to digitise historic news archive
Agerpres has signed a grant agreement to fund the digital conversion of its historic archive, aiming to make the material publicly accessible.
Agerpres announced that it has concluded a financing agreement with the Authority for the Digitalisation of Romania, which will serve as the intermediary for the Smart Growth, Digitalisation and Financial Instruments Programme. The initiative, worth 7.529.934,73 lei and financed entirely by grants, combines contributions from the European Regional Development Fund and the state budget. The agency will act as both coordinator and beneficiary, marking its first EU-backed project in this role.
Over a three-year period, the historic archive—containing images and documents collected since 1889—will be digitised and made available online to citizens, researchers and private entities. Agency director Claudia-Victoria Nicolae highlighted the importance of preserving national memory and combating misinformation through accessible digital records. Ana-Maria Bușoniu of the Intermediary Organism for Promoting the Information Society praised the project as a model for using EU funds to safeguard Romania’s documentary heritage.
