Aging Population Strains Australian Emergency Departments and Health System

A new report shows older Australians are using emergency services more often, lengthening wait times and threatening hospital capacity.

A recent college report highlights a surge in emergency department use by Australians over 65, with visits increasing markedly over the past six years. At the same time, the share of patients leaving the emergency room within eight hours has declined from historically high levels, raising concerns because each 72-person delay cohort is associated with a death. Seniors typically arrive via ambulance, require treatment within 30 minutes, and about half are admitted.

Regional communities are ageing at roughly twice the rate of capital cities, intensifying demand on local hospitals. The report urges expanded non-hospital care pathways, better prevention, and more research to keep older patients out of crowded emergency rooms.

Why it matters

Rising demand from older adults threatens timely emergency care, potentially increasing preventable deaths.
