Aging Shifts Walking Strategy Toward Stability, Raising Fatigue Risk
Researchers found that older adults stiffen their ankles during each step, favoring balance over efficiency, which leads to slower, more tiring walks.
Scientists from Flinders University and the University of Canberra examined gait patterns in 107 adults ranging from their mid-twenties to mid-eighties. They observed that older participants increasingly activate opposing ankle muscles simultaneously, a phenomenon known as co-contraction, which stiffens the joint and improves stability at the cost of efficiency. Consequently, push-off power declines, stride length shortens, and walking speed drops, causing quicker fatigue and a higher fall risk.
The team describes this shift as a nervous-system-driven, safety-first approach to movement. They recommend that exercise programs for seniors emphasize balance, coordination, and targeted lower-leg strength alongside general activity. The findings aim to inform fall-prevention strategies and support healthier aging.
