Ahmedabad to Host Major Vande Bharat Maintenance Hub Worth Rs 307 Crore

A new Rs 307 crore maintenance centre in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad will centralise heavy repairs, wheel care and electrical overhauls for Vande Bharat trains.

Ahmedabad's Sabarmati site is being transformed into a Rs 307 crore hub for Vande Bharat train maintenance, featuring heavy-repair sheds, a wheel-care workshop and a fully operational electrical substation. The heavy-repair shed, nearing completion, will host two lines: one for lifting coaches and removing bogies, and another for interior, braking and electrical repairs. Modern machinery will service wheels and axles, and the depot will also overhaul traction motors, transformers and other critical electrical components.

The centre can perform SS-I maintenance on a 24-coach set in about 30 days and SS-II work in roughly 45 days, allowing it to handle around 12 or eight trainsets per year respectively. Consolidating these capabilities in Ahmedabad should reduce the need to move trainsets to other locations for major servicing.

Why it matters

The hub will streamline Vande Bharat train upkeep, cutting downtime and boosting Indian Railways' efficiency.
