AHS teachers warn new upper secondary curricula are unworkable without proper guidance

Teachers' union leader Georg Stockinger says the rollout of new upper secondary curricula, including "Democracy and Media" and expanded AI instruction, lacks a finalized plan and training.

The upcoming introduction of new curricula for upper secondary classes adds a dedicated "Democracy and Media" subject and expands AI coverage within computer science, according to teachers' union representative Georg Stockinger. He claims the education ministry's preparation has been highly unprofessional, leaving schools without the actual curriculum documents and forcing decisions on subject integration by February. While teacher training at pedagogical universities started early this month, the courses lack concrete material because only a draft regulation from August exists.

Stockinger also notes that the new curricula are far more detailed than previous framework plans, requiring a paradigm shift across all subjects. He warns that many schools are still unaware of the extensive changes, which also affect textbook approvals and the upcoming school cluster reforms that would reduce staff representation rights.

Why it matters

The dispute could disrupt teaching and student learning as schools scramble to implement detailed curricula without clear guidance.
