AI Advances Cut Revenues for Japan's Translation Firms as Market Shifts

Japanese translation companies saw sales fall 9.7% and profits plunge 70.7% in fiscal 2025 as free AI tools erode demand.

Tokyo Shōkō Research examined a decade-long dataset from 100 Japanese translation agencies, finding that fiscal 2025 revenues totaled ¥39.3 billion with net earnings of ¥920 million, marking a 9.7% drop in sales and a 70.7% decline in profit since the fiscal 2022 high of ¥43.5 billion and ¥3.1 billion. Thirty-two firms reported higher sales and 35 posted higher profits, but 50 saw reduced sales and 47 experienced lower profits, reflecting intensified price competition as AI can now translate basic texts at no cost.

International market studies by QY Research and Business Research Insights project the AI-assisted translation sector to expand from roughly $2.6 billion in 2025 to $4.2 billion by 2032, and to $5.7 billion by 2035 respectively. Analysts argue the industry's future hinges on human translators leveraging AI to boost productivity while carving out niches in complex, specialized, or creatively demanding translation tasks. The shift underscores a broader transformation in language services worldwide.
