Advances in artificial intelligence are moving toward autonomous medical care, illustrated by the FDA’s recent approval of a blood-draw system that operates without a human operator and Anthropic’s multi-year memorandum with the Government of Rwanda to deploy AI in combating cervical cancer, malaria and maternal mortality. In a JAMA article, Ezekiel Emanuel contends that current data show AI alone surpasses both unaided physicians and physicians using AI across tasks such as history taking, test ordering, diagnosis ranking, treatment recommendation and chronic disease management, projecting that fully autonomous AI could be viable in many clinical workflows within four years.
A Pew survey reports that one-third of U.S. adults use AI chatbots for health purposes, including 18 % for issues they find uncomfortable discussing with doctors, and most users find them at least somewhat helpful. Dario Amodei cited his sister’s positive experience with Anthropic’s Claude as evidence of AI’s superior bedside manner.
