AI Apps Aim to Guide Soldiers Through Battlefield First Aid Without Medics

Ukrainian and U.S. teams are testing AI-driven tools that help soldiers treat injuries when medical help and evacuation are unavailable.

Retired trauma surgeon Travis Polk notes a growing "tactical mismatch" as modern battlefields push troops into isolated teams far from medics. To address this, Ukrainian surgeon Roman Kuziv developed the ALICE app, which lets a soldier photograph a wound, answer questions and receive immediate combat casualty care instructions, with separate modes for medics and non-medics. Meanwhile, the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Military Medicine Research is field-testing FieldCare GPT, an offline chatbot that runs on a high-performance laptop and references the 75th Ranger Regiment Medic Handbook and Tactical Combat Casualty Care guidelines.

Both projects aim to augment memory and decision-making under stress, though experts caution they are not substitutes for trained medical personnel. Ongoing trials with Ukrainian medics and U.S. service members will identify gaps before wider deployment.
