AI-backed Buyers Push San Francisco Home to Nearly Double Asking Price

A San Francisco house at 2 Sixth Avenue sold for $15 million, almost twice its $8 million asking price, amid a surge of AI-related capital.

A historic San Francisco home at 2 Sixth Avenue fetched $15 million, nearly twice its $8 million listing, after being put on the market in mid-September. The 1914-era house, spanning 4,490 square feet and featuring a library, reading garden, large terrace, and a detached two-car garage, sits on a lot more than three times the size of typical city parcels. The owners, both in their 90s, decided to sell after decades of family ownership.

Although the sale price is substantial, it falls short of the city’s record, with a Cow Hollow property recently closing at a comparable amount after a lower asking price. Real-estate analysts attribute the heightened demand and willingness to overpay to the influx of capital from AI startups and major tech firms seeking talent in the Bay Area, which has driven median home prices above $2 million.

Why it matters

The sale shows how AI-driven wealth is intensifying San Francisco's already unaffordable housing market.
