AI Certifications Viewed as New Career Currency by Majority of Americans, Survey Shows

Over half of U.S. adults now consider AI certifications essential for career advancement, according to a recent survey.

New research commissioned by Colorado State University Global surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults and revealed that 57% view AI certifications as the emerging “career currency.” The sentiment is strongest among millennials (65%) and Gen Z (64%). When asked about valued workplace abilities over the next five years, participants prioritized problem-solving, adaptability, communication and critical thinking, with younger workers also emphasizing leadership and creativity.

Yet 48% remain uneasy about using AI at work, pointing to low confidence, cultural resistance and insufficient training as obstacles. Dr Audra Spicer, interim president and CEO of CSU Global, said educational programs and organizational leadership are key to fostering responsible AI adoption. Two-thirds of employed respondents expect AI to affect their career paths within a year, and half predict new hires will need AI proficiency within six months.

Why it matters

Growing demand for AI skills could reshape hiring standards and workforce training across the U.S.
