AI data center surge drives push for solid-state power transformers

The rapid growth of AI-focused data centers is spurring interest in solid-state transformers, a newer, compact alternative to century-old grid technology.

U.S. electricity grids are straining under the surge of power needed for AI data centers, which now represent the biggest driver of rising demand. Traditional transformers, handcrafted with copper coils around steel cores since the 1880s, must be custom-built for each substation and can take years to replace, slowing grid expansion and upgrades. In contrast, solid-state transformers use high-frequency semiconductor switching and silicon-carbide materials, allowing mass manufacturing, lighter weight, and modular designs that simplify part replacement.

They also function as all-in-one power electronics, converting alternating current from the distribution network directly into the direct current required by densely packed AI chips, removing the need for separate AC/DC converters. Tech companies constructing the largest AI facilities are therefore investing in this newer technology, seeing it as a way to meet power needs more efficiently and accelerate grid modernization. If adopted widely, solid-state transformers could ease the bottleneck caused by long lead times for conventional units and support the transition to more resilient, flexible power infrastructure.
