AI Data Centers Strain Small Town Water Supplies Across the U.S.

Several AI-focused data center projects have triggered water leaks, bacterial contamination and muddy wells in small towns such as El Reno, Cheyenne and Morgan County.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is creating water-related problems in rural communities. A leak at Athlon Blockchain Technology’s Bitcoin-mining site in El Reno, Oklahoma, spilled more than three million gallons, forcing schools and businesses to close and resulting in a city-issued stop-work order. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, Meta’s data center generated wastewater that introduced the bacterium Cupriavidus gilardii, prompting the Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities to fine Goat Systems and ban cooling-water discharges.

Meanwhile, residents of Stanton Springs, Georgia, claim their well water turned brown after large-scale grading nearby, a concern amplified when Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez presented samples on the House floor. Experts note that many municipal water systems are aging, making them vulnerable to the added demand from such facilities. Some tech firms, like Microsoft in Quincy, Washington, are investing in water-reuse plants to mitigate impact, but the overall trend raises questions about infrastructure readiness and accountability.
