AI-designed lung drug shows promise in reducing biological age markers in trial

The AI-generated medicine rentosertib, developed for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, also cut age-related biomarker scores in a small clinical study.

Insilico Medicine used artificial intelligence to create rentosertib, a candidate drug for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and evaluated it in a 12-week trial involving 43 participants. The study measured biological age with six distinct ageing clocks, all of which reported a reduction in predicted age after treatment. While the results suggest the compound may influence ageing processes, the trial did not include healthy subjects and the cohort was small.

Insilico’s approach combines large-scale health data and protein-structure modeling to generate drug candidates, a method echoed across the biotech sector. Cardiologist Eric Topol described the outcome as promising but emphasized the need for larger, definitive trials. The findings highlight the growing role of AI in drug discovery and its potential impact on longevity science.
