AI-driven analysis maps hundreds of genes linked to schizophrenia risk

A new study using artificial-intelligence models has identified 766 genes associated with schizophrenia, revealing a complex network rather than isolated causes.

An AI-powered investigation published in Nature Genetics has produced one of the most detailed genetic maps of schizophrenia to date, pinpointing 766 implicated genes. Among these, 641 had not appeared in prior transcriptomic studies, and many were discovered through distant regulatory signals, supporting the view that the disorder stems from a coordinated gene network. The project analyzed genetic information from more than 102,000 participants and examined brain tissue from six regions obtained from hundreds of donors.

Contributors included scientists from the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, the University of Bari and dozens of psychiatric research centers across multiple countries. The World Health Organization estimates the condition affects roughly 23 million people globally, underscoring the importance of understanding its multifaceted genetic architecture. By illuminating the underlying gene interactions, the study offers a clearer foundation for future research into mechanisms and potential therapies.
