AI-driven dynamic spectrum sharing could free up crowded airwaves
Researchers are using artificial intelligence to enable dynamic sharing of radio spectrum, easing the shortage caused by growing wireless demand.
Every wireless device relies on the finite radio spectrum, and the surge in smartphones, streaming and IoT gadgets is straining its capacity. Traditional management assigns exclusive licences, but studies show large swaths sit idle for much of the time. Dynamic spectrum sharing lets secondary users occupy those gaps, stepping aside when primary users, such as military radars, need the band.
The U.S. Citizens Broadband Radio Service illustrates this with a three-tier model overseen by a Spectrum Access System that reallocates the 3.5 GHz band in seconds. Advances in software-defined radios and cognitive radio concepts give devices the flexibility to switch frequencies on the fly. Artificial intelligence now assists by predicting interference and optimizing power levels, a task too complex for static rules. As future applications like autonomous vehicles and remote surgery demand more bandwidth, smarter spectrum management will be essential.
