AI-driven laser mosquito zapper hits market as West Nile cases climb in California

Photon Matrix, a Chinese startup, introduced a laser-based mosquito eradication system that combines LiDAR, radar and AI to pinpoint insects as small as 2 mm moving up to 3.3 ft/s. The outdoor unit, described as an "Iron Dome for mosquitoes," projects a blue laser within a 20-foot range and retails for $1,088, while an indoor version using invisible infrared detection is priced at $988. Videos show the outdoor device creating a light display as it zaps mosquitoes.

The launch comes as California reports a five-year peak of 30 West Nile Virus cases, including a recent death. Officials note that 80 % of infections are asymptomatic, but severe cases can cause fever, headache and neurological symptoms. The company claims its system offers a quieter, chemical-free method for mosquito management.
