AI-driven screenings detect 500 asymptomatic breast cancer cases in Istanbul

Istanbul health officials reported that 500 people were diagnosed with breast cancer after AI-assisted screenings of 125,000 residents, despite having no symptoms.

In Istanbul, health authorities screened 125,000 people for breast cancer this year, employing artificial-intelligence-enhanced double-blind analysis of mammograms. The AI system identified 8,000 residents as potentially at risk, and subsequent examinations confirmed 500 cases of breast cancer in individuals without any complaints. Those patients have started surgery and chemotherapy under coordinated appointments arranged by the health department.

Screening activity rose 40% compared with last year, reflecting greater public interest and the expansion of preventive care through more than 5,000 family physicians, 1,121 family health centers and 34 healthy-living centers, including KETEM facilities. Officials emphasized that early detection reduces long-term health costs and improves outcomes, urging residents to seek screening before symptoms appear.

Why it matters

Early, AI-assisted detection can dramatically improve breast cancer outcomes and lower healthcare costs.
