AI-driven visits to Hungarian websites surge dramatically, outpacing traditional search traffic
AI interfaces such as ChatGPT and Gemini now generate a hundred-times more visits to Hungarian sites than two years ago, while search-engine traffic declines.
The third-quarter 2026 AI Traffic Index released by JabJab Online Marketing shows that AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini now send a hundred times more traffic to Hungarian websites than they did two years earlier. News sites have experienced the sharpest jump, with AI-driven visits six to seven times higher in the recent four-month window compared with the prior period, a trend fueled by heightened information demand around the spring parliamentary election and more frequent AI citations since May.
Despite the influx, traditional free-search traffic continues to shrink, and AI referrals covered only 4.7% of the search-engine loss between April and July 2026. Sector-specific shares of AI traffic range from about 1.1% for telecom sites to 1.6% for marketplace platforms, while accommodation sites have seen a milder impact. The report warns that users often rely on AI-generated summaries without opening the original pages, underscoring the ongoing importance of source verification.
Why it matters
The shift toward AI referrals reshapes how Hungarian users discover content and threatens traditional search-engine revenue models.
