AI-enhanced energy storage transforms telecom and data-center power use

ZTE Digital Energy unveiled an integrated AI-driven battery system that lets telecom and data-center operators turn idle storage into revenue-generating, grid-stabilising assets.

ZTE Digital Energy's AI-enabled storage architecture replaces fragmented vendor components with a unified hardware and software stack, featuring a 261 kWh cabinet BESS for edge sites and scalable container units reaching hundreds of megawatts. The system's intelligent management ingests generation data, market signals and weather inputs to compute the most profitable charging and discharging strategies, achieving over 90 % efficiency and eliminating diesel backup in many cases.

Operators can earn by exploiting peak-valley price spreads, providing frequency-regulation services, selling green certificates or leasing capacity. Deployments are already underway, such as Türkiye Telecom's 128 MWp solar farm in central Anatolia and European telecoms installing storage at base stations to tap local arbitrage and demand-response markets. The technology is also being adapted for industrial parks, commercial buildings, smart farms, mines and off-grid microgrids, promising cost cuts, emissions reductions and stronger grid resilience.
