AI-generated images falsely depict a car hanging from Delhi flyover

Fact-checkers found that photos and video of a car dangling from wires in Delhi are almost certainly AI-created, not real.

Investigators searched for any news coverage of a car allegedly hanging from wires beside a Delhi flyover and found only unverified social-media content. A reverse-image search failed to locate any authentic source. When the visuals were run through Hive Moderation's AI detector, the video scored a 99.8% probability of being AI-generated, while the still image scored 99.9%.

Further analysis with Google's Gemini SynthID identified signals that the image was created or altered by Google's AI suite. The fact-check determines that the images and video are fabricated and being shared as if they showed a real incident. No legitimate evidence of such an event exists.

Why it matters

It highlights how AI can fabricate believable disaster images, underscoring the need for verification.
