AI-Generated Songs Flood Streaming Services as New Russian War Propaganda Tool
Hundreds of AI-crafted songs praising Russian forces and vilifying Ukrainians have appeared on major streaming platforms, according to a threat-intelligence report.
A new wave of artificial-intelligence generated music praising Russian troops and dehumanising Ukrainians is circulating on services like Spotify, Apple, YouTube and Deezer, a study by threat-intelligence NGO Terrecon reports. The analysis catalogued 981 songs that meet its definition of pro-Russian war propaganda, most of which were released after 2024 when AI music tools such as Suno, Udio, Google Flow Music and Singapore-based Mureka became widely available.
The tracks span genres from sentimental ballads to aggressive thrash metal, featuring references to artillery systems and employing ethnic slurs while framing the 2022 invasion as a necessary defence. Streaming platforms have varied approaches to AI content: Deezer and YouTube label some items, Spotify added AI tags in September, but few explicitly ban propaganda, and moderation often relies on keyword filters rather than overall meaning.
The Kremlin’s role in disseminating the songs is not confirmed, though a Moscow-based Internet Development Institute has promoted over 350 war-related artistic projects. Terrecon’s own tests showed that prompting the generators could reproduce similar propaganda, highlighting gaps in current content-moderation practices.
