AI-generated videos of wounded UK veterans promote cheap Chinese-made patriotic items
Fake videos using AI to depict disabled British veterans are being used to market low-cost patriotic merchandise made in China.
A new report reveals that artificial-intelligence tools are being used to fabricate videos of wounded British veterans, who appear to ask for help while promoting cheap patriotic products sourced from China. The scams have duped veterans like Raymond Gilbert, who spent $200 on a supposed handmade wooden flag figure, only to receive a package marked in Chinese and containing a printed flag glued to plywood. Similar AI-generated ads are circulating on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, offering items such as bags, cutting boards and door wreaths.
Technology specialist Will Guyatt explains that a single prompt can produce these emotionally charged videos within minutes. Platforms rely on users to flag and remove the content, but perpetrators often reopen new accounts to repost. British attorney Daniel Fletcher describes the situation as a losing battle against the rapid proliferation of AI-driven fraud.
