AI-guided Russian drone kills three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, raising autonomous-weapon alarms
A Russian drone equipped with experimental AI detonated at a Zaporizhzhia gas station, killing three Ukrainian civilians and sparking fears over autonomous weapons.
In July, a Russian drone fitted with an experimental artificial-intelligence module exploded at a gas station in Zaporizhzhia, killing three Ukrainian civilians, including 19-year-old university student Tetiana Bubynets. The aircraft, designed to look like a model plane, was programmed to approach the station, after which its AI autonomously identified and struck what it assessed as propane tanks. Debris recovered from the site revealed the weapon contained an Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputer, a low-cost chip also present in other Russian weapons.
Ukrainian air-defence commander Serhiy Minaiev warned that machines making strike decisions could soon resemble a “Terminator” scenario. Kateryna Bondar of the Wadhwani AI Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies called the incident the first documented case of self-targeting AI drones causing civilian fatalities, confirming Russia’s experimentation with autonomous battlefield technology. Nvidia said the chip is intended for consumer-grade applications and is not sold directly to Russia, though it circulates via resellers. The attack highlights growing concerns about AI-driven weapons in modern conflicts.
