AI Hedge Fund's Near Collapse Highlights Record Market Leverage

The AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness nearly failed after banks demanded repayment, exposing unprecedented borrowing in equity markets.

Leopold Aschenbrenner launched the eight-person hedge fund Situational Awareness in 2024, raising roughly $45 billion in assets at its peak. Major banks such as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America and others extended tens of billions in credit, allowing the fund to amass a concentrated AI-stock position with leverage up to ten times investor capital. A sharp summer drop in AI equities triggered lender demands for repayment, prompting a distressed $20 billion stock sale to Ken Griffin’s Citadel at a reduced price and shrinking the fund to roughly $10 billion in assets.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has subpoenaed Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup and Bank of America for information, while the Bank for International Settlements warned that such leveraged unwindings could spark broader market stress. Proposed SEC rule changes to ease hedge-fund borrowing disclosures have been criticized by Senator Elizabeth Warren as increasing market opacity.

Why it matters

It shows how extreme leverage in hedge funds can threaten market stability and prompt regulatory action.
