AI IPOs Could Unlock $430 Billion in Charitable Giving, Echoing Gilded-Age Philanthropy

The upcoming public listings of OpenAI and Anthropic are projected to free up about $430 billion for charitable donations, a scale comparable to historic Gilded-Age foundations.

Projections suggest that the initial public offerings of OpenAI and Anthropic could each generate valuations exceeding $1 trillion, unlocking an estimated $430 billion in charitable pledges. Anthropic’s seven co-founders have committed to donate 80% of their wealth, which could translate into roughly $110 billion, with an additional $60 billion expected from employee-matched donor-advised funds. OpenAI’s nonprofit, the OpenAI Foundation, owns 26% of the company’s shares and may soon control about $260 billion for large-scale grants.

The combined charitable potential represents about 1.3% of U.S. GDP and rivals the historic giving of the Ford, Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations. While the figures are based on current IPO forecasts, the actual market debut dates are still undefined, and it remains to be seen whether the promised contributions will be fully realized. Recent collaborative philanthropy, such as a $500 million vaccine initiative led by the two AI firms and Stripe, underscores a growing trend of tech-driven giving.

Why it matters

If realized, the AI firms' pledges could reshape global philanthropy with unprecedented funding levels.
