AI-manipulated videos of Russian advances expose new propaganda tactic
Between June and August, at least 35 battlefield videos were altered with AI, including a clip of Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi in Sviatohirsk, misleading observers about Russian gains.
After President Vladimir Putin declared the capture of Sviatohirsk on Sept. 1, a video showing Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi in the town was later admitted to be AI-generated. The Institute for the Study of War identified a total of 35 such altered clips from June 1 to Aug. 30, many of which were initially presented as proof of Ukrainian defeat. A Kremlin-linked blogger and a pro-war channel both acknowledged the deception after the videos circulated. The pattern suggests a systematic effort to inflate Russian battlefield successes.
