AI music firms Udio and GRAI secure licensing for extensive UMG-backed patent portfolio
Music IP Holdings, created with Universal Music Group and Liquidax, has licensed over 24 patents to AI music platforms Udio and GRAI, covering creation, moderation, watermarking and monetization of AI-generated content.
Music IP Holdings, established last year through a partnership between Universal Music Group and the IP firm Liquidax, has entered licensing agreements with AI music services Udio and GRAI for a portfolio of more than 24 patents. The patents encompass key functions such as moderation, watermarking, licensed distribution and monetization of AI-generated music and other derivative content. Daniel Drolet, chief executive of MIH, said the patents are meant to foster responsible innovation while giving creators stronger safeguards and a share of the value they generate.
Udio chief Andrew Sanchez and GRAI co-founder Ilya Liasun stressed that the technology will allow artists to be credited and compensated whenever their work is used in AI-enhanced songs. MIH’s chief operating officer Paul Ketchel noted the framework also covers AI-derived video and voice material. Universal’s executive vice president Chris Horton described the licensing as part of a broader strategy to build an ethical AI music ecosystem that centers on artists and songwriters.
Why it matters
The deal sets standards for how AI-created music can be tracked and paid for, protecting creators while shaping the future of AI in entertainment.
