AI Pioneer Ray Kurzweil Becomes Vision Advisor for Neurotech Startup Subsense
Ray Kurzweil has joined Subsense as a product and vision advisor, helping the Silicon Valley startup develop an intranasal brain-computer interface.
At a Wednesday event in Palo Alto, Subsense introduced Ray Kurzweil as its new product and vision advisor, tasking him with guiding the company's brain-computer interface strategy. Subsense's approach involves delivering charged nano particles to the brain via an intranasal spray, which can then be controlled by a magnetic-coil-equipped cap to stimulate or monitor neurons. The startup, which has secured $27 million in funding, is still in the pre-clinical stage, testing the concept on mice and displaying a non-functional mock-up of the cap.
CEO Tetiana Aleksandrova described the technology as potentially the most intimate device humanity will create. Kurzweil, a celebrated AI thinker and National Medal of Technology and Innovation laureate, will provide insight on how AI and neural interfaces may reshape human-computer interaction. The effort is positioned alongside other neurotech ventures such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink, though Subsense’s method avoids surgical implantation.
