AI poised to accelerate cancer research at Scotland's leading institute

Leaders at the CRUK Scotland Institute say artificial intelligence could dramatically speed up cancer discoveries and improve patient outcomes.

The head of the CRUK Scotland Institute, Professor Owen Sansom, announced that artificial intelligence is set to "supercharge" cancer research by analysing huge volumes of data to uncover concealed tumour signatures and hasten the development of early-diagnosis tools and therapies. He reflected on the institute's half-century of pioneering work, which has laid foundations for global patient benefits, and suggested that AI could reshape discovery speed over the coming fifty years.

The institute, originally founded in 1912 and renamed in 2023, now hosts around 300 scientists across 30 groups and is recognized as a world-leading cancer discovery centre. Executive director Iain Foulkes described AI as a catalyst for turning complex research into actionable breakthroughs, while chief executive Michelle Mitchell affirmed Cancer Research UK's commitment to invest in AI-driven technologies to save more lives.

Why it matters

AI could cut years off cancer research, leading to earlier diagnoses and more effective treatments for patients.
