AI-Powered Drones Tested for Rapid Wildfire Suppression in California and Alaska
CAL FIRE trialed Seneca’s autonomous firefighting drones in California, while XPRIZE’s Alaska finals showcased Dryad Networks’ self-operating drone system for early-stage wildfire response.
CAL FIRE conducted a field test on July 15 with FireWERX and Seneca, flying five autonomous drones equipped with AI vision to spot ignitions and spray aerated Class A foam, capable of delivering between 500 and 1,000 pounds of suppressant per mission. While not a replacement for large airtankers, the drones can be quickly positioned near high-risk zones and operated by a single pilot overseeing multiple aircraft. Earlier trials of Seneca’s Argo-1 system in San Bernardino County demonstrated semi-autonomous thermal tracking for early response.
In Alaska, the XPRIZE Wildfire competition’s June 2026 finals required teams to detect and extinguish fires without human input; Dryad Networks’ Silvaguard system used solar-powered forest sensors to trigger an observation drone, which then directed a suppression drone carrying roughly 100 liters of agent. Aspen Fire Protection District in Colorado signed a five-year, multi-million-dollar agreement for a Seneca Strike Team, slated for delivery in summer 2026, with training to integrate the drones into regular operations.
These autonomous platforms are designed to work alongside existing AI detection networks like UC San Diego’s ALERTCalifornia and the newly launched FireSat satellites, aiming to shrink the critical window between ignition and suppression. Though payloads remain modest and performance depends on weather and coordination, the technology promises an additional tool for firefighters confronting increasingly severe wildfire seasons linked to climate warming.
