AI-Powered Physics Startup Targets Data-Center Efficiency and Deep-Space Probe

Physical Superintelligence, funded with $58 million by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, is deploying AI physicists to boost data-center efficiency and support a far-future interstellar probe project.

Physical Superintelligence emerged from stealth this week, securing $58 million in financing spearheaded by Bill Gates-originated Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Co-founder Matt Pines described the firm’s mission as applying artificial-intelligence-based physics research to accelerate scientific breakthroughs, beginning with data-center efficiency. The AI physicist collective, called Emmy, is equipped with hard verifiers designed to flag instances where the system is overly confident yet incorrect.

Their first practical application targets a massive Texas data-center, where they aim to refine cooling systems, power distribution and electrical flows prior to construction. In parallel, the startup participates in a privately funded, AI-planned venture to design a probe for Alpha Centauri, a mission estimated to require 70,000-75,000 years. Pines emphasized that solving fundamental physics could unlock rapid progress across agentic science.
