A new book argues that breakthroughs stem more from novel tools than lone geniuses, and suggests AI could excel at designing such instruments.
In "The Engine of Scientific Discovery," Alexander Krauss disputes the popular narrative that singular geniuses or sudden insights generate major scientific advances. He argues that the development of new methods and instruments—such as microscopes, telescopes, particle accelerators, and the ultracentrifuge—has historically opened previously inaccessible areas of inquiry, driving breakthroughs across fields. Krauss points out that roughly one-quarter of scientific domains are defined by the tools that enable them, citing examples like Ernst Ruska's electron microscope spawning modern cell biology.
He also reinterprets famed serendipitous findings, noting they depended on specific equipment, such as Wilhelm Röntgen's discharge tube for X-rays. Looking forward, Krauss suggests that artificial intelligence could become a pivotal partner in designing the next wave of scientific tools, potentially reshaping how research is conducted. The analysis is presented in a book released by Oxford University Press.
