AI tools aim to detect dementia risk before symptoms appear
Researchers in the EU-funded AI-Mind project have created two AI-based diagnostic tools to identify people at risk of dementia earlier.
Under the EU-backed AI-Mind initiative, scientists have built two complementary AI diagnostics: the Connector, which spots patterns in brain electrical signals linked to dementia risk, and the Predictor, which evaluates cognitive scores, biomarkers, medical history and personal factors to assess progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia. The tools are intended to support clinicians rather than replace them, facilitating earlier conversations and care planning.
Initial testing in Norwegian clinical settings has shown promise, and the consortium is now looking for resources to broaden the study to other countries. Regulatory approval as medical devices under the EU framework is required, with a clinical evaluation expected by 2035. Partnerships with firms such as Eli Lilly, Roche and Bosch aim to adapt the technology for use on common devices like tablets and smartphones.
