AI tools are enabling criminal gangs to exploit more British children online

The UK anti-slavery commissioner warns that AI-generated fake profiles are helping gangs groom and traffic children, including those from stable families.

According to the UK anti-slavery commissioner, gangs are exploiting artificial-intelligence to fabricate profiles that mimic teenagers, making it harder for authorities to detect grooming. In 2025, 7,045 children were identified as potential trafficking victims, a 17% increase from the previous year, and over 60% were British nationals. The criminals are recruiting children to move drugs or launder money, often targeting those unknown to social services and from well-off backgrounds.

The Internet Watch Foundation notes rising sextortion rates and the use of AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery for blackmail. Lyons said tech companies are falling short of their obligations under the Online Safety Act and urged the government to adopt a specific strategy to stay ahead of perpetrators. The upcoming ban on under-16s using platforms like Instagram and Facebook is seen as a positive step, but further action is needed.

Why it matters

AI-driven exploitation threatens the safety of children and outpaces current legal and tech safeguards.
