He notes that many budget and policy decisions are made by administrators who lack hands-on experience, resulting in inaccessible evidence, broken handoffs, and unrealistic tool expectations. While vendors like Magnet Forensics have introduced AI engines—Magnet AI—that can generate leads and summaries within seconds, Shavers stresses that such outputs are merely probabilities and must be cross-checked against original data.
He warns that without verification, AI could produce misleading conclusions, citing past AI errors that led to wrongful arrests and absurd police reports. To address these gaps, Shavers is partnering with Magnet Forensics on an independent survey of law-enforcement leaders, examiners, and prosecutors to identify failure points in digital investigations. He concludes that only practitioners should dictate how AI is integrated, otherwise the burden of mistakes will fall on wrongly accused individuals and victims seeking justice.
