AI Use Grows in U.S. Workplaces, Prompting Government Adoption Strategies

A recent Census survey shows that over half of American workers are using AI for routine tasks, and city officials are experimenting with similar approaches in government.

Data from the Census Bureau’s bi-monthly Household Trends and Outlook Pulse Survey indicate that about 55% of U.S. workers have employed AI for at least one of eleven surveyed tasks, most commonly searching for information, drafting communications, and generating ideas. Respondents said AI often saved one to two hours per one outlet, though a minority saw no benefit or extra effort. While the survey does not focus on government employees, it raises questions about how public agencies can adopt AI as workers become more comfortable with the technology.

Louisville Metro Government’s chief AI officer, Pamela McKnight, outlined a strategy that empowers interested staff with training, tools, and support while maintaining cyber-security safeguards. Brendan Taylor, a domain information security officer for the State of Tennessee, emphasized the need to select the right AI product for each use case. These perspectives illustrate how government entities are translating broader workplace AI trends into tailored, secure implementations. The Census Bureau will continue to track such shifts through its regular surveys, providing ongoing data for policymakers.

Why it matters

Understanding how AI is used in everyday jobs helps governments design effective, secure AI programs for public services.
