AI‑generated child sexual abuse images spark regulator alert in Malaysia

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been alerted to a case where artificial intelligence was used to create and share sexual images and videos of students and teachers at a school in Kedah. The commission said the conduct violates Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the child‑protection obligations in Section 18 of the Online Safety Act 2025, with potential penalties of up to RM500,000 and imprisonment of up to five years for offences involving children.

Meanwhile, the Internet Watch Foundation reports that it has identified over 6,000 AI‑generated child sexual abuse images in the past six months, a rise from the previous year. Both developments underscore the growing challenge of policing AI‑produced illegal content online.
