Air-Conditioning Saves Thousands of U.S. Lives Yet Fuels Climate Warming, Experts Warn

Air conditioning prevents over 5,000 deaths annually in the United States, but its expanding electricity use intensifies greenhouse-gas emissions and strains power grids.

A new analysis in Nature Health shows that U.S. air-conditioning prevented roughly 58,000 deaths from extreme heat between 2010 and 2020, translating to an average of about 5,267 lives saved each year, with the greatest benefits in southern states such as Arizona, Florida and Texas. The same cooling boom is driving a surge in electricity consumption; the International Energy Agency and UNEP expect global demand for cooling to triple, and associated carbon emissions could climb from 4.5 billion to 7.2 billion tons within about 25 years.

To curb this, several countries—including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Jordan, Malaysia, the Philippines, the Seychelles, Singapore and Sri Lanka—have imposed limits on indoor temperature settings or scheduled regular shutdowns for public buildings. The Indian government has also proposed temperature caps for 2025. Experts like Kai Chen of Yale School of Public Health warn that over-cooling offers no additional mortality benefit and worsens climate change, recommending a typical 75 °F (24 °C) limit.

UNEP officials point to Singapore’s integrated approach—combining efficient HVAC standards, urban greenery and early-warning systems—as a model for “smarter, more equitable cooling.” Until extreme heat overwhelms passive measures, fans and modest air-conditioning remain the preferred health safeguard.
