Air France reroutes 130 transatlantic flights to curb climate-warming contrails

Air France altered the routes of 130 long-haul flights between Europe and North America to avoid persistent contrail formation, estimating a reduction of 22,000 tonnes of CO₂.

Air France announced that, after a targeted experiment from February to April, it changed the flight paths of 130 transatlantic services to sidestep areas where persistent contrails are likely to form. The airline partnered with two French firms, Estuaire and Klima, which specialize in reducing aviation’s climate impact. Using weather data to pinpoint zones with high water-vapor content and temperatures conducive to ice formation, the carrier rerouted flights to the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean without causing any passenger delays.

The airline estimates that this measure avoided the equivalent of 22,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The initiative is part of the EU’s Ciconia project, which also involves Airbus, Boeing, EasyJet, Swiss and various research and regulatory bodies. A forthcoming conference in Paris will discuss contrail mitigation strategies.
