Air India pilot barred from Zurich departure after staff detect alcohol odor

A Zurich ground-handling team observed an Air India captain smelling of alcohol on September 6 and alerted officials, leading to his removal before the aircraft could depart. While pilots flying out of India undergo mandatory pre-flight drug and alcohol testing, those on foreign-origin flights are usually tested after landing, but Air India and IndiGo maintain a strict zero-tolerance stance for any alcohol presence. Airline officials said the report originated from internal staff, indicating that the safety reporting system is functioning.

In response, Air India has stepped up leadership interaction with crews, expanded health and wellbeing sessions, and added support mechanisms for personnel. The carrier reiterated that any confirmed breach will be addressed firmly in line with regulatory and company policies. The incident adds to recent safety challenges faced by the airline under its new CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam, who has prioritized building a stronger safety culture.
