Air New Zealand pilots allegedly clash in San Francisco hotel, prompting flight cancellations

A former Air New Zealand pilot, speaking anonymously, relayed that two airline pilots argued during an Auckland-to-San Francisco flight earlier this month and the disagreement escalated into a confrontation in the lobby of their San Francisco layover hotel. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed it is aware of the report but will not discuss whether regulatory action is being considered. Records indicate Air New Zealand cancelled services departing San Francisco on September 6 and 7, attributing the disruptions to pilot illness and rebooking passengers on a recovery flight with accommodation assistance.

Both the New Zealand Air Line Pilots’ Association and the Federation of Air New Zealand Pilots said they have not received any requests for support from members regarding the incident and affirmed the airline’s internal policies. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration directed inquiries to local authorities and the airline. Passengers described the situation as unusual but praised the airline’s response to the delay.
