Airbnb launches parametric rain insurance offering up to €1,000 daily payout
Airbnb introduced a weather-protection plan that can pay travellers up to €1,000 per day when rain exceeds set thresholds during their stay.
Airbnb’s Weather Protection insurance, launched on October 8, 2026, offers a parametric payout when rainfall at the booked accommodation reaches at least 1.5 mm per hour between 8 am and 8 pm for a policy-specified duration. Eligible residents of Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands can add the optional cover, which must be purchased at least seven days before arrival and costs vary by booking.
Payouts are pre-determined, ranging from €50 up to €1,000 per day, and do not require travelers to prove personal loss. Claims are automatically triggered by external weather data and handled by Chubb European Group SE, which notifies customers and processes payments after identity verification. The scheme excludes stays of 30 days or more and does not cover snow, hail, strong winds or certain natural disasters. British citizens residing in Spain qualify, but those traveling from the UK do not.
