Airbnb updates house-rule policy to ban demanding checkout chores
Airbnb has revised its community policy, prohibiting hosts from requiring guests to perform tasks that would normally be done by a cleaner, such as stripping beds or taking out trash.
Airbnb has rolled out a community-policy update that bars hosts from imposing checkout chores that require significant effort or would typically be handled by a professional cleaner. Examples such as stripping bed linens or taking out bins are now prohibited, while simple actions like putting dishes in the sink remain allowed. The company said house rules will be displayed more prominently on the listing page, trips tab, and reservation reminders, with seven standard rules covering check-in/out times, guest limits, smoking, pets, quiet hours, and commercial filming.
Hosts may still add “reasonable” requests, but any that violate the new policy will be flagged and must be removed or appealed. The cleaning fee is limited to a basic tidy-up between stays, and guests cannot be charged for failing to complete disallowed checkout tasks.
Why it matters
The change protects travelers from unexpected, time-consuming chores and clarifies what cleaning fees should cover.
